How the TOC Is Generated

Authorio automatically generates a table of contents from your book's chapter structure. You do not need to create or maintain it manually. As you add, remove, rename, or reorder chapters, the TOC updates to reflect the current state of your book.

The TOC pulls chapter titles directly from your outline, listing them in the order they appear in the editor. This means the table of contents is always an accurate reflection of your book's actual content and sequence.

TOC Formatting

The table of contents follows your selected typography theme. The font, spacing, and overall visual style of the TOC match the rest of your book's interior pages, ensuring a consistent look throughout.

The TOC is formatted as a structured list of chapter titles with corresponding page numbers. It appears at the front of your book, after the cover and any front matter, giving readers a clear overview of what the book contains and where to find each chapter.

Because formatting is tied to your theme, switching themes will update the TOC's appearance along with the rest of your book. You do not need to reformat it separately.

TOC in Exported Formats

The table of contents is included in all of Authorio's export formats, though it works slightly differently in each:

PDF Export

In PDF output, the TOC includes chapter titles and page numbers. It functions as a traditional printed table of contents, allowing readers to see the full book structure at a glance and navigate by page number. The TOC pages feature the same headers and footers as the rest of your book.

EPUB Export

In EPUB format, the TOC serves as a navigable document. EPUB readers use the table of contents for in-app navigation, allowing readers to tap a chapter title and jump directly to it. This is the standard navigation mechanism for digital ebooks across all major reading platforms and devices.

In both formats, the TOC is generated during the export process using your current chapter structure. There is nothing to configure manually -- Authorio handles the generation, formatting, and placement automatically based on your book's content and selected theme.
