PDF Export

Print-ready PDF with pagination, headers, and footers

Updated 2026-02-26

What PDF Export Includes

The PDF export produces a fully formatted document with your book's content, cover, table of contents, chapter structure, and all design elements intact. Every setting from your selected theme -- typography, spacing, colors, and layout -- is applied to the exported file. The result is a professional, paginated document ready for sharing or printing.

PDF export includes:

  • Your book's cover as the first page
  • Table of contents with accurate page references
  • All chapters with their headings, body text, images, lists, blockquotes, and calls to action
  • Headers and footers on each page
  • Automatic page numbering throughout

When to Use PDF

PDF is the most versatile export format. Use it when you need to:

  • Share your book for review -- Send a formatted PDF to editors, beta readers, or clients who need to read the full manuscript.
  • Print at home or at a local printer -- PDF files print correctly on any standard printer without layout issues.
  • Distribute digitally -- Attach the PDF to emails, upload it to your website as a lead magnet, or include it in a course or membership area.
  • Archive a finished version -- PDFs preserve your book's exact appearance across devices and operating systems.

If you need files specifically formatted for print-on-demand services, use the Print-Ready export instead, which adds bleed and trim marks.

Headers and Footers

Your exported PDF includes headers and footers as defined by your book's theme settings. Headers appear at the top of each page and footers at the bottom, providing navigation context for the reader. These elements are configured through the Theme tab in the editor -- see Headers, Footers, and Dividers for details on customizing them.

Pagination

Page numbers are generated automatically during export. Authorio calculates the correct pagination based on your content length and page layout settings. You do not need to insert page numbers manually -- they appear in the footer area and flow consistently from the first chapter through to the end of the book.

Downloading Your PDF

Open the export panel, select PDF, and click the export button. Once the file is generated, it downloads directly to your device. You can re-export at any time if you make changes to your content, cover, or theme.
